KTE "99

On July 17, 1999, my wife Karen and I attended the Kubel Treffen East held in Asheville NC.  We arrived Friday morning about 11:00.  There were already some Things in the parking lot and I learned later that some had a arrived Thursday evening.  The event began with a car show Saturday morning.  There were vendors set up selling parts and collectibles, clothing, clocks etc.  In all 107 Things were registered.

I set up a display case out in front of my car.  In this case was my collection of magazine articles, toys, books etc.  Also in front of my car was a Parking Meter and my dash plaques.

Behind our car I had a display of red plaid picnic items.   Even though this did not have anything to do with the VW Thing, I thought it would be fun to do.  Would you believe, I had the only picnic display at the show!

In my trunk, I displayed my new and old round box tools.   Also in the trunk were some of the repair manuals I have collected over the past 30 years.

I had a great deal of fun at the event and would recommend it to every Thing owner.  There were two treffens, a poker run, awards, and a Bar-B-Q Saturday evening.  I met many owners form all over, and many stories were related over the three days.

The weather and accommodations were great.  Karen and I look forward to next year.
