We took our Type 181 to Effingham Illinois Saturday to participate in the Volkswagen festival held there every year.

Mine was one of more than 875 air-cooled Volkswagens (and I was one of 7,000 enthusiasts) that participated in the two day party held at Mid America Motorworks' headquarters in Effingham IL.

Though there were light sprinkles of rain around 9:30 AM, those passed and the rest of the day was partly sunny and very warm.

Notice the latest addition in the rear bumper…  I’m not sure if this was a factory option in ’74, but with the gas prices the way they are, I figure it can’t hurt.

The only problem with this system is you must slow down to under 5 mph while your passenger jumps out to wind it up!

The covers for the seat backs are last year’s free Funfest tee shirts with the neck and arm openings sewn shut!

Of course the highlight of the day was a visit from my wife Karen and our Scottie Tavi.  Of course it doesn’t hurt that we live 30 miles north of Effingham!

We had a great time, renewed some old acquaintances and made many new ones.  It gave me the opportunity to visit with Thing owners from all over, even as far away as Atlanta GA. I would recommend attendance to anyone.
